11/06/2019 Presentation of the Concept of the 53rd Bitef, a Press Conference in Brussels

At a press conference, held on June 11, 2019 in the Flemish cultural center "Kunstenpunt" in Brussels, was presented the concept of 53th International Belgrade Theatre Festival (BITEF) on the occasion of the participation of two Belgian performances - "Orest in Mosul" by Milo Rau and "Called" by Sepe Bejens in the program of this year’s BITEF. Artistic director of the festival, Ivan Medenica, explained at the press conference that the main program of BITEF includes performances that discuss the breakdown of the political community (but also family and partnership relations) primarily to those who are trying to offer an alternative through the restoration of humanistic values: freedom, equality, solidarity, collective work and dedication, trust. One of BITEF's key performance is "Orest in Mosul" by famous director Milo Rau, based on Eshil's Oreste, placed in the city of Mosul in Iraq, destroyed by the ISIS terror and attacks by American aviation against Islamists. Another artistic line, which, along with the thematic, always carrying axis of the main program, at 53 BITEF will be the so-called "Imperial Theater" in which the differences between scenes and theaters, performers and viewers are erased, and where the audience "plunges" into the world of the scene. In this part of the program, the play called "Invited" by Seppe Beyens is being produced in the production of the famous company Ultima Vez, from Brussels. Author, choreographer Seppe Beyens, who participated at the conference, explained that his performances at the stage sometimes include 150 people, although the performers, in fact, only have 15, ages 12 to 95 years old. His goal is to erase the distance between the performer and the audience, "to gradually build a community" and ultimately to "bring the theater back to people". For 52 years the existence of BITEF, from 1967 to 2018, over 700 performances were played, of which 18 Belgian. The performances from Belgium in the last few years, according to the opinion of the audience and the expert public, but also in the interest of the media, were among the best ones: "Olympus: To the glory of a tragedy cult" by Jan Fabre, who won the Grand Prix in 2017, "Suite Nr. 3 'Europe' " by the director Joris Lacoste that opened the 52nd BITEF and "Requiem for L." by Alan Platell, who won the ovation of the audience in 2018 in the Sava Center and won a special award. Besides the journalists, the conferences were attended by representatives of European theater networks of the International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts (IETM) and the European Festival Association (EFA).
